Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart  Piano Concerto no. 17 in G major K. 453
Anton Bruckner
Symphony no. 1 in C minor
Conductor
Claudio Abbado / Piano Maria João Pires / LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA including MAHLER CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

Following the LUCERNE FESTIVAL, Claudio Abbado and his LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA, of which the MCO is the core, will embark on their traditional international concert tour. This year, the first stop is Vienna, where the ensemble will play two concerts in the Musikverein. Two days later, the LFO will make its Russian debut in Moscow, and will then travel to Hamburg, to open the concert season of the Elbphilharmonie in the Laeiszhalle. The tour wraps up with a benefit concert in the northern Italian city of Ferrara, which is recovering from the earthquake that struck the region of Emilia-Romagna last May.

The programme consists of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 17 K. 453, with soloists Maria João Pires (in Moscow and Hamburg) and Maurizio Pollini (in Vienna and Ferrara). In the second half of the programme, the orchestra will present the seldom-heard Vienna version of Bruckner's Symphony No. 1. The performance of this symphony at the LUCERNE FESTIVAL this August earned Claudio Abbado and his "Wunderensemble" (FAZ) unanimously glowing reviews: "Unpretentious, with a unique understanding of the large structure," wrote the FAZ, and the the Neue Zürcher Zeitung deemed the concert "simply a sensation."
