The Canadian Barbara Hannigan appears in this Late Night concert as soprano and conductor. In her own words: "With this weird conducting thing, I'm really on a path that's my own. It's like walking on virgin snow: there are no footsteps where I'm going." For Ligeti's "Mysteries of the Macabre", she will also be performing onstage, decked out in an S&M-style leather bodice.

Barbara Hannigan is an "artiste étoile" at this summer's LUCERNE FESTIVAL. She worked with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra for the first time in summer 2012. Back then, Hannigan (in the title role) and the MCO (in the orchestra pit, conducted by the composer) gave the world premiere of George Benjamin's award-winning opera "Written on Skin".
