The Mahler Chamber Orchestra (MCO) was founded by its musicians more than 10 years ago. Their goal was to make music at the highest possible level, unrestricted by external influences and guided solely by their own artistic and humanistic values. The ensemble has remained consistent to the path it laid out at the start, and will follow it with complete conviction toward a successful future.
Claudio Abbado has been the orchestra’s mentor from the beginning, and has led the orchestra in many formative concerts and opera performances. Karin and Roland Berger have long stood at the MCO’s side, giving advice and active support in economic and structural matters. Their combined efforts over the years culminated in the founding of the MCO Foundation in 2008; as members of the Foundation’s Council, the Berger family and Claudio Abbado can now focus their efforts on securing the long-term future of the orchestra.
The MCO Foundation has set itself the goal of building an international network for the orchestra, made up of private individuals who are motivated out of a sense of responsibility and citizenship to help the MCO to sustain its independence into the future.
The MCO Foundation supports young talent and provides funds that allow the performance of contemporary music and commissions for new works. Recording projects of all kinds as well as insufficiently financed but artistically interesting concert and opera projects will also be made possible by the Foundation.
