Each year in the spring, Claudio Abbado appears with the MCO in Ferrara. Abbado is the founding father not only of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra but also of the concert promoter Ferrara Musica, and he is responsible for bringing the two together. When Abbado conducts the orchestra in this, its city of longest residence, the concerts are sold out many weeks in advance.
It has become a tradition for friends of the orchestra from all over the world to travel to the North Italian city for these events. They enjoy the sunny Italian spring, meeting fellow music lovers from across the globe and attending exclusive rehearsals by the orchestra.

Martha Argerich appears once again as soloist this year. The MCO, Claudio Abbado and Martha Argerich are a team well-rehearsed in Beethoven: in 2004, they recorded Beethoven's Piano Concertos Nos. 2 and 3 for Deutsche Grammophon and were honoured with a Grammy.
