Raphael Bell

Raphael Bell // Cello

Cellist Raphael Bell has performed at international festivals such as Ravinia, Verbier, Aix-en-Provence, Bel-Air, and IMS Prussia Cove, and is co-founder and co-director of the Charlottesville Chamber Music Festival.

He recently performed at Wigmore Hall in London with musicians Pekka Kuusisto and Matthew Hunt as a part of the IMS Prussia Cove tour that won the 2007 Chamber Music Award from the Royal Philharmonic Society.

He has toured Europe, Asia, and South America as a member of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, and has made numerous recordings with these ensembles for Deutsche Grammophon, Virgin Classics and ARTE under conductors Claudio Abbado and Daniel Harding.

He has performed as soloist with the Curtis Institute Symphony Orchestra, the Alexandria, Hendersonville, and Las Cruces Symphonies, and at Carnegie Hall in the United Nations “Time for Peace Awards,” at Wigmore Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Hall, Ford’s Theater, the American Academy in Rome, and the Cite des Arts in Paris.

Raphael Bell is an Artist-in-Residence at La Loingtaine in Fontainbleau, and is a member of the recently formed La Loingtaine Trio with violinist Aki Sauliere and pianist Mimi Solomon.

He has worked with the English Baroque Soloists, Orchestra Revolutionaire et Romantique, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the Dante Quartet, and as guest principal cello with the BBC Concert Orchestra and European Camerata.

Raphael Bell is a graduate of The Juilliard School where he studied with Harvey Shapiro. Other important teachers have been Mario Brunello, Joel Krosnick, Bernard Greenhouse, and Steven Isserlis.
