Christoph Strehl was born in Lübeck, where he sang as a boy soprano in the choir of the famed “Lübecker Sing- und Spielkreis” and got to know music from Schütz to Distler. After completing his secondary education, he studied voice at the Folkwang-Hochschule in Essen.
After several years at various German theatres, culminating in a stint at the Nationaltheater of Munich, he was hired by Alexander Peirera at the Zurich Opernhaus. From there, he began the international career that has made him one of the most sought-after Mozart tenors of the present time.
After appearances in Munich, Dresden, Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne, Düsseldorf and Frankfurt, Mr. Strehl was invited to Paris (Garnier), Venice (Teatro Malibran) and the Salzburg Festival, where he worked with conductors Nikolaus Harnoncourt, William Christie, Franz Welser-Möst, Adam Fischer and Marc Minkowski, and with directors Jürgen Flimm, Martin Kusej, David Mouchtar-Samorai, Claus Guth, Christof Lov, Nikolaus Lehnhoff and Stefan Herheim.
Mr. Strehl sang in Cosi fan tutte at the Salzburg Festival in 2005, in The Magic Flute in Ferrara in 2005 under Claudio Abbado, in Fierrabras and Les Indes Galantes in Zurich, and in The Magic Flute at the Vienna Festwochen (Harding) in 2006, and in a new production of La Finta Giardiniera in Zurich (Harnoncourt). He made his Met debut in 2006 as Tamino. Since then, he has performed in new productions of The Magic Flute, Die Fledermaus. Fidelio and Haydn’s La Fedelta Premiata in Zurich, Abduction from the Seraglio at the Aix Festival, Eugene Onegin in Munich, The Magic Flute in Geneva and London and Don Giovanni in Barcelona. Future projects include Abduction from the Seraglio at the Liceu Barcelona, Die Schweigsame Frau at the Semperoper Dresden and Don Giovanni in Amsterdam, as well as many productions in Zurich.
As a concert singer, Christoph Strehl has performed at the Schubertiade, the Styriarte Graz, and in Vienna, Munich, Cologne, Madrid and Cleveland.
Christoph Strehl can be heard on the recording of The Magic Flute with Claudio Abbado. His appearances on DVD include Les Indes Galantes, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Fidelio.
