Israeli violinist Gregory Ahss started to play the violin at the age of 5 at the Gnessin School of Music in his native Moscow. He continued his education at the Israeli Music Conservatory, Tel-Aviv Academy of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where his teachers were Lena Mazor, Irena Svetlova and Donald Weilerstein. During his studies he won the Strings and the Chamber Music Competition of the Academy as well as the Music Interpretation Prize in Israel and the International Violin Competition in Porto, Portugal.
He was also a holder of the America-Israel cultural foundation scholarship from 1993 until 2001. While still a student, Gregory founded the Tal Piano Trio, which won numerous prizes including first prize at the prestigious "Premio Trio di Trieste" International Chamber Music Competition in Trieste, Italy in 2002.
As a soloist, Gregory has performed under Claudio Abbado and Yannick Nézet-Séguin with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra Mozart Bologna and Camerata Salzburg. He has also led these ensembles on various occasions.
His chamber music partners include Natalia Gutman, Sabine Meyer, Gautier Capucon, Valentin Erben and Daniel Hope, with whom he performed double concerti of Vivaldi and Bach with Camerata Salzburg at the Menuhin Festival, Gstaad.
As a guest concertmaster, Gregory has appeared with the London Symphony Orchestra, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal as well as Bamberger Symphoniker, Bayerisches Staatsorchester, Orchestra dell`Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Orchestra Mozart and Camerata Salzburg.
Gregory has appeared at the Verbier, North Norway, Gotland and Israel festivals.
As concertmaster, he has been leading many concerts of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra from 2005 to 2011. He also serves as one of the concertmasters of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA. Gregory currently plays a Stradivarius from 1723 on loan by the MCO Foundation.
