Weiße Welt.
Die Tage hier in Dortmund sind bedeckt von einer weißen Schneedecke. Man merkt überall, dass Weihnachten nicht mehr lange auf sich warten lässt, unendlich viele Menschen tummeln sich auf dem Weihnachtsmarkt, und die geschmückten Bäume strahlen einem überall entgegen.
Für mich gibt es dieses Jahr ein vorgezogenes Weihnachtsgeschenk: in einem Probespiel wurde ich mit ein paar anderen Studenten ausgewählt, als Akademist an einem Projekt des MCO mitwirken zu dürfen! Drei Konzerte mit dem MCO unter der Leitung von Ton Koopmann! Und noch dazu mit einem Programm, das für mich perfekt zu dieser Stimmung kurz vor Weihnachten passt!
Die Spannung vor der ersten Probe ist riesig. Es ist ein nebeliger Morgen, sehr kalt und dunkel. Die ersten Musiker treffen ein, ich bin in freudiger Erwartung. Herr Koopmann strahlt eine sympathische Fröhlichkeit aus, die erste Probe steht an: Das ist es also! So fühlt es sich an, Teil dieses wunderbaren Klangkörpers zu werden! Am Anfang ist es noch ein bisschen fremd, aber mit jedem Takt, jeder Probe, jedem Konzert wird es natürlicher und besser! Der Nebel vom ersten Morgen ist vergessen, es ist warm und sehr hell geworden. Wir sind in Köln, mitten im letzten Satz der Mozart Jupiter-Sinfonie. Die Begeisterung am Musizieren strahlt aus den Bewegungen des MCO, strahlt aus unseren Gesichtern, und in den letzten Takten fühle ich mich wie in einem Rausch. Mit diesen Menschen, solch eine freudige, positive Musik spielen zu dürfen – das ist ein großes Geschenk! Vielen Dank!!

Friday 10th December Arriving for the first rehearsal, needless to say I was bubbling. Both with excitment of what was to come and with nerves. After all, I was about to finally properly meet the MCO. Also, it was the first time I would work so extensivelly with such a prominent figure in the early music world - I suppose this made it my formal introduction to the early music world. It all started with an introduction of the works we were playing given by Koopman himself. It was surprising to see how gentle and open he was; an impression that was to be confirmed throughout the project. He went, in some detail, through each piece and the stylistic issues that would need special attention: trills, articulation, tempi, vibrato etc.. By the end of the talk, I was already feeling pretty comfortable but some nerves I was still keeping for the sectional rehearsal that was about to come. As expected, by the time we started playing, nerves were out of the window. They were replaced by concentration, enthusiasm, and trying to hold the cello without a spike! Not letting it slip or not getting cramps, proved to be a little more difficult than expected. In only two hours we were confronted with a lot of new information from our coach - a wonderful Dutch baroque cellist.
Sunday 12th December The family concert on Sunday was to offer yet another new experience. The only piece in the programme was Handels Fireworks Music, for which we were joined by some very energetic young kids. I have never seen such an enthusiastic audience - how often do you get such clapping before the piece has even finished! One realises what music can do to people, how it can make people explode with energy and sheer happiness.
Thursday 16th December All the three concerts, in Essen, Cologne and Dortmund were different. Both in terms of how I was feeling and how the orchestra played. It's wonderful to see how an orchestra can be so flexible and responsive. Being on stage and knowing that everybody is involved, listening and responding to one another is just incredible! I can only hope I will be part of such experiences again in the future.
It all finished as quickly as it started. Now people were getting ready for the next day; some people rehearsing already for the next concert and some people finishing the great time with MCO. iI was stuck in two worlds: the world of going home and the world of my amazing time with the MCO!
