So, here we are again.
It's already the second week of Lucerne and with all that's been going on it kind of feels as though we've been here for at least three weeks!
As usual we have a very busy schedule including rehearsals, concerts, chamber music and the friends' meeting. Not to mention the arrival of a very special new member, a certain Mr Stradivarius. 

We have had some fabulous concerts with Claudio, who never seems to lose his energy or ability to inspire his musicians to new heights.

I think this is the week I've been looking forward to the most. Don't get me wrong, playing with Jurowski was incredible. What a programme, and with such a fabulous conductor. But I have been so looking forward to Daniel coming back, and especially to playing The Magic Flute with him. We had a very successful Asia tour with Daniel back in June. Although it was also quite a punishing schedule, it was very sad when the last concert was over, but we all knew we could look forward to seeing him again in Lucerne.

342 concerts together! Can you imagine? Most of us including Daniel were in our early twenties when we first played together. As Daniel himself said in the speech he gave when he received the title of "Conductor laureate", we have been through so many things together. Not only incredible musical experiences, but also life changing experiences. Weddings, births, deaths. We have grown together, and learnt from each other. I think that is how we all feel.
It seems right then, that we celebrate this tonight with a performance of The Magic Flute.

A concert version of an opera is never an easy option. The audience often comes away regretting that they didn't feel the "Opera experience" for lack of staging, costumes etc. In tonight's version we get the best of both worlds, the voices and music take centre stage and with cleverly worked dialogues and a small mise en scène we are transported into the world of Papageno and The Queen of The Night.

We've all been bowled over by the cast of stars we have, both singing and performing. Not only do they have incredible voices but one of them in particular, Andrew Staples who sang the role of Tamino wrote the narration, organized the mise en scène, and the lighting.

I guess this is just the kind of dedication that Daniel gets from the people he works with, and for the lucky ones of you who will be at the performance tonight I think this will come through loud and clear. So here's to number 343!

P.S. I just have one regret, that we won't play this in London, Baden-Baden or Paris,  when we go on tour with the LFO in October, sorry to all of you who will miss it!

On est déjà dans notre deuxième semaine à Lucerne avec l'impression que nous sommes là depuis au moins trois semaines!
Comme d'habitude nous avons un planning très chargé avec répétitions, concerts, musique de chambre et la journée annuelle des amis du MCO, sans compter l'arrivée d'un nouveau membre au sein de l'orchestre, un certain Monsieur Stradivarius!

Nous avons joué de superbes concerts avec Claudio. On n'a jamais l'impression qu'il perd ni son énergie ni sa façon d'inspirer les musiciens.

Cette semaine est celle pour laquelle je me réjouissais le plus. Bien sur le concert avec Jurowski était super, un programme magnifique et quelle chef extraordinaire, mais j'attendais avec impatience le retour de Daniel Harding après une mémorable tournée en Asie en juin.

342 concerts ensemble! Vous imaginez? Comme Daniel le dit lui-même nous avons grandi ensemble. Nous n'avons pas seulement partagé des moments musicaux extraordinaires , mais aussi partagé les expériences de la vie; mariages, naissances et décès. Nous avons tant appris les uns des autres. Cette collaboration est unique pour nous, et rare en générale.
C'est bien juste alors que nous célébrions cela ce soir avec une représentation de La Flute Enchantée.

Une version concert d'un opéra est difficile a défendre.Le public regrette souvent de ne pas avoir eu "l'expérience opéra" à cause du manque de mise en scène, de costumes etc... Mais la version de ce soir allie le meilleur des deux mondes. Les voix et la musique occupent le centre de la scène, et avec l'intervention d'un narrateur, quelques effets sonores et de lumière  nous sommes transportés dans le monde de Papageno et de La Reine de la Nuit.
Les voix sont superbes. Quel plateau! Le ténor Andrew Staples qui chante le rôle de Tamino a écrit le récit et organisée les lumières.

En très peu de temps nous avons pu créer quelque chose de plus qu'un simple concert, et pour ceux d'entre vous qui vont pouvoir assister au spectacle ce soir, je pense vous allez vous rendre compte du l'exceptionnel engagement que Daniel suscite auprès de ses artistes. Vive le 343ème  concert avec Daniel!

P.S.  Un regret,  nous ne jouerons pas cette Flûte à Londres, Baden-Baden ou Paris en Octobre, lors de la tournée du LFO. Désolée pour vous tous qui allez manquer cette expérience!
